Factitious Disorder Imposed on Self

Presenter(s): Jordyn Hope
Day: Day 1 — Sept 9, 2026
Session: Breakout Session 1 — 10:45 AM–12:15 PM
Level: Intermediate

Understanding Survival, Harm, and Compassionate Response Factitious Disorder Imposed on Self (FDIS) is often misunderstood, heavily stigmatized, and shaped by assumptions that can interfere with effective care. Behind these behaviors are often complex histories of trauma, unmet needs, attachment wounds, and systems that have struggled to respond with consistency and compassion. This training explores why some individuals may fabricate, exaggerate, or induce illness in themselves, not to excuse harm, but to better understand it. Participants will examine common motivations, behavioral patterns, and the impact of bias in healthcare, mental health, and investigative settings. The workshop will also explore how professionals can respond with clearer boundaries, increased curiosity, and reduced shame while maintaining accountability. Attendees will leave with a stronger understanding of FDIS and practical tools for engaging in ways that reduce escalation, retraumatization, and systemic harm.
