Autism, Trauma, and Child Protection

Reducing Harm and Responding with Care Autistic children and adults are often misunderstood in child welfare, legal, educational, and healthcare systems. Differences in communication, affect, sensory processing, and behavior are frequently misread as defiance, dishonesty, manipulation, or lack of credibility, increasing the risk of retraumatization and systemic harm. This training explores how autism and trauma can intersect, particularly for children and survivors navigating abuse investigations and complex systems. Participants will learn how autistic experiences may shape disclosure, behavior, memory, emotional regulation, and engagement with professionals. The session will challenge common misconceptions and provide practical strategies for adapting communication, reducing overwhelm, and creating safer, moreaccessible interactions. Attendees will leave better equipped to recognize autistic needs and respond in ways that build trust, reduce harm, and support more accurate assessments.
